Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has called for a review of university curricula in Nigeria, arguing that some courses should be reconsidered to create room for more innovative and job-oriented programmes.
Speaking on the need for reforms in higher education, the governor questioned the relevance of courses such as English Language and Religious Studies, claiming they offer limited employment opportunities for graduates.
Nwifuru suggested that university administrators and vice-chancellors should engage in discussions aimed at restructuring academic programmes to better align with current economic realities and labour market demands.
According to him, higher institutions should focus more on creative, practical and skill-based courses capable of equipping students with employable skills and improving their prospects after graduation.
The governor’s remarks have since generated debate among academics, students and members of the public, with differing views emerging on the role and value of humanities and social science courses in national development.
