The Anambra State Government has issued a stern warning against the abuse, intimidation and discrimination of widows, particularly in matters relating to inheritance and property rights.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Esther Chinyere Onyekesi, gave the warning during a visit to Mrs. Nneka Azubuike Udokwu, a widow from Obosi who is currently receiving treatment after she was allegedly assaulted.

Onyekesi condemned all forms of harassment against widows and reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration to protecting vulnerable women and ensuring they enjoy their legal rights without fear or intimidation.

The commissioner described the alleged attack on Mrs. Udokwu as disturbing and called on relevant authorities and community leaders to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure justice is served.

According to the ministry, the widow has reportedly endured years of harassment and property-related disputes following the death of her husband. She alleged that some individuals were attempting to force her out of her matrimonial home and deprive her of properties jointly acquired with her late husband.

Mrs. Udokwu, who is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the alleged assault, appealed to the state government, security agencies and civil society organisations for protection and intervention.

The Anambra State Government reiterated that anyone found guilty of violating the rights of widows or unlawfully taking over their property would face appropriate sanctions under the law.
